A wedding at the Begijnhof in Leuven | Mariko & Johan
Happy Easter Monday ! It is the Easter weekend and after I even got a little sunburn yesterday sitting outside all afternoon today I am wearing my warmest jumper and drink hot green tea as it rains and rains and rains. It is just typical April weather here in Münster.
This morning when the raindrops where knocking on my roof window the weather reminded me of the wedding of Mariko and Johan last August. Mariko and Johan booked us quite last minute – just a month in advance. We „met“ trough Skype and as their wedding took place at the beautiful place Leuven in Belgium we had to arrive one day early to be there on time on the wedding day. They were so kind to invite as to their rehearsal dinner which was a great chance for us to meet them and their Japanese- Belgian family an evening prior to the wedding. The evening of the rehearsal dinner was warm and sunny and we all ate outside on the terrace of their wedding location „Begijnhof Hotel“ in Leuven. The morning after started with pouring rain and it wouldn’t stop until the next day.
The Groot Begijnhof in Leuven is an area which is a protected monument by the UNESCO. Their guests came just for their day from all over the world most of them from Japan and Belgium as Mariko is Japanese and Johan in Belgian. They met at work in Tokio some years ago. After their first dinner together in Tokio they first started a long distance relationship because Johan had to go back to Brussels until Mariko moved to Belgium too, to be closer to him. Family played a huge role during their day and it was lovely to see how caring and thoughtful they planned their time line of the day to have as much time with family and friends as possible.
Mariko and Johan we feel lucky that you invited us to capture your historic day. We wish you sitting on the terrace of the Begijnhof over 60 years flipping trough your wedding album and remember all the moments and the guests that you invited to be with you in August 2013.
